Health Data Insight CIC (HDI) are pleased to announce the launch of the Post Imaging Pancreatic Cancer (PIPC) Root Cause Analysis (RCA) Project, a national project to improve the early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.
Pancreatic cancer is often diagnosed at a late stage, when curative treatment is no longer possible. Each year in the UK, around 800 people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer 3 to 18 months after a CT or MRI scan that did not detect their disease. These cases are known as post imaging pancreatic cancers.
The PIPC project will audit these cases using national cancer registration and imaging datasets to understand why PIPC occurs and how many might have been preventable. NHS trusts across England will review PIPC cases using a dedicated online audit form within the National Disease Registration (NDRS) clinical audit system. Data will then be analysed by clinical colleagues at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust.
The PIPC is supported by a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Research for Patient project grant and delivered in collaboration with NHS partners, academic experts, Pancreatic Cancer UK and NDRS. Findings will be shared widely to help improve diagnosis and patient outcomes.
