Rebeca enjoys off-the-beaten track travelling but is now learning a new sense of the word “adventure” with the arrival of her baby boy. She also enjoys basking in the sun, yoga, climbing and sharing a good meal with friends.
Internship and Fellowship Lead
Rebeca began her professional life as a Biochemist. After obtaining a BSc from the University of Lisbon, she moved to London in 2014 to complete an MSc at UCL. She furthered her research skills working as a research assistant at UCL specialising in genetic disorders, followed by a PhD at Imperial College working on metabolism.
During her PhD, Rebeca took an interest in coding to identify differences in behaviour between genetic variants of a protein. This sparked her curiosity for data analysis in the health sector and, in 2020, she paused her studies to join HDI as an intern.
During this time, Rebeca and the team of interns developed Syndasera, a prototype for an online service that generates synthetic data for researchers. Her contribution involved evaluating the synthetic data, designing interactive data visualisation tools and setting up a secure server on AWS for uploading confidential data.
On completion of her PhD, Rebeca has returned to HDI as Team Lead for the 2022 internship and fellowship programmes.
