HDI Intern Scheme

Introduction

Each year HDI are able to offer a small number of places on our summer intern scheme. The internship usually runs from July through to September with up to six places available. The Internships are usually advertised in October for the following year with interviews being held before Christmas. You can see details of the current scheme in the news posts below.

In previous years we have run both individual placements with students working on a project with a supervisor and in 2020 we ran a group project with our six interns all working on the same challenge.

“It’s been a really good experience. Even though it’s only been 7 weeks I have gotten a lot done and have a lot to say for myself and for my work here.” (Tobby, 2019 intern)

Internship Details FAQs

What do we offer and how are interns supported?

This internship is a chance to join a thriving and enthusiastic community of bright individuals. The team will be supported by an Intern Team Lead, with specialist input from developers, project managers, analysts, science communicators and many other professionals.

This internship is about developing specialist skills and is also a chance to enhance your communication, collaboration, organisational and team-working skills.

Interns will meet regularly to discuss their progress on the project and the Intern Team Lead will always be available either in person or online for queries and support.

What are the hours, pay, expenses and leave entitlement?

The normal working week is 37.5 hours and we offer flexible working. Interns are paid £1,500 per month plus expenses according to our expenses policy. You are also entitled to 2.5 days leave per month plus bank holidays.

When is the internship?

The internship runs during the summer months – usually July to September each year.

Where will the placement be?

The internships usually take place at HDI’s offices in Fulbourn, Cambridge. There may be other options to work around the country and we have also run a completely distanced project in 2020 because of Covid-19. So if you are concerned about travel please ask about the options.

Is accommodation available locally?

The following links offer some accommodation options in Cambridge:

Accommodation Service

We have now closed the Accommodation Service offices at Kellet Lodge and Eddington to all visitors. We are also highly unlikely to be able to respond as quickly to enquiries as we would like.

Cambridge University Accommodation Service (above) can provide accommodation for students from outside the University of Cambridge but there is a small charge for gaining access to their listings. If you wish to apply to them, fill out the form on their website the best you can putting “Health Data Insight CIC” in where it asks for Dept and the dates you will be here and they will then contact you.

Student Accommodation UK. Student Housing Houses Flats Homes

I was so happy to not only find our lovely house on this website, but also find a really friendly housemate really quickly after someone had dropped out on us. Well impressed and would definitely recommend this site to everyone looking for houses/housemates!

Holiday Lets, Homes, Experiences & Places – Airbnb

Unforgettable trips start with Airbnb. Find adventures nearby or in faraway places and access unique homes, experiences, and places around the world.

Please note we do not have any affiliation with any of the companies mentioned above and cannot endorse them but if you are having trouble finding accommodation please get in touch and we will see what we can do to help.

“During my internship at HDI I spent a lot of time playing with data in Oracle SQL. The training and guidance I received on this was superb.” (2017 intern)
